The Origin of SARU.
I have always had a problem finding the right sized pillow and this problem only got worse when I started to work Fly In Fly Out – travelling to different mine sites which meant different accommodation and ultimately, different pillows. The pillows were either too big, or too small – if they were too big I would wake up with a sore or stiff neck and if they were too small, it would put pressure on my broad shoulders. I never got enough sleep while on site which made working 12 hour shifts, 7 days a week difficult. I then started taking two small pillows with me, but it still wouldn’t be quite the right size, not to mention the amount of space it took up in my suitcase - I was not the only one having this issue; my workmates used to have the same problem; I searched high and low in different stores, as well as online looking for an adjustable pillow but couldn’t find any.
One day I was talking to my mum about my pillow issue and she said to me, “Well, you don’t have to look to someone else to solve your problem, I am sure you can come up with your own solution”. My mum stirred a voice inside me, pushing me to come up with a solution.
One day, my car tyre was almost flat and I only just managed to get to the petrol station to fill it up, as I was pumping air into my tyre, I observed how it expanded and it was an instant lightbulb moment for me; I realised I could use the same principle of air technology to be able to adjust the pillow to suit my body. At first I was doubtful, but my intuition kept burning inside me and I remembered a quote, “When something is important enough, you do it… even if the odds are not in your favour”
To me, my sleep is very important, and I approached Form Designs to discuss my idea and they delivered.
Our pillow has been named after my mum who spurred me into action to come up with a solution, my mum kept encouraging me until a game changer pillow was born. The SARU. In honour of my mum.
